Concealers | TDXO Drugstore Makeup

Concealer is a bit underrated, IMHO.

BUT, it’s actually a pretty powerful and versatile little product that can be used in many different ways - and give your look a serious lift.

But before we get into all of that, what is concealer anyway? It's similar to foundation - except it’s generally thicker and hides dark circles, age spots, blemishes and more by hiding pigments and blending these imperfections into the skin! Oh, and less is more (seriously). A small amount of concealer should do the trick.

Okay, now that we covered (pun is intended, hehe) the basics, here's how you can use concealer to bring your makeup to the next level:

  • Blur fine lines - small application where fine lines occur

  • Contour - Shade the areas of your face that you normally like to appear more chiseled with a DARKER shade of concealer. For most people, this means their cheekbones and under the jaw. Place the contour concealer color along the edges of the hairline, around the temples, under the jawline, and under the cheekbones to bring more depth into the face. Then use a LIGHTER shade to highlight the high points of your face. (demonstrated here)

  • Cover dark circles - through correct application under the eyes

  • Highlight cheekbones and high points of the face - to the inner corner of eyes, tops of cheekbones to add a bit of lift to the face, and down the center of the nose, should you want to give the illusion of it being more slender

  • Hide blemishes - using the right concealer shade is important when covering up breakouts. Choose an exact match to your skin tone to camouflage texture. Using a concealer shade that is too light for your skin tone is like putting a spotlight on your zits.

  • Prime lids and lips - a tiny dot before putting on eyeshadow or lipstick locks those products in place!

Now I'm going to clue you in on my favorite trick: when you're using concealer to highlight highpoints of the face, you'll want to one to two shades lighter than foundation (and maybeeee even THREE shades lighter if you want to get an extra snatched look for evening makeup).

*do not recommend going much lighter for daytime looks since it can come off a little harsh in the sunlight*

Now, we're not talking about your everyday look, because most articles will tell you 2 shades MAX. However, I get asked on the daily how I make my makeup pop in photographs or at events and going a slight shade lighter than normal is one of my favorite party tricks!

Okay, SO, here's the most important part of going lighter in the under eye: be SURE to make a triangle shape under eye - NOT a semi circle under the eye.

semi circle = raccoon

raccoon= does not have a place in our makeup looks unless you're dressing up as the unfriendly, but adorable rodent

OKAY. NOW THAT WE HAVE THAT OUT OF THE WAY.

To kick off our drugstore makeup series, here's a few of my favorite concealers that you can find at your local drugstore. And in case you're like: "Hey, Tiff. Why is ULTA included in your drugstore series???" ULTA actually has an entire section in their stores with drugstore makeup! Now you know!

Disclaimer: I know this isn't drugstore - but Tarte Shape Tape concealer will ALWAYS be my absolute favorite. It's unbeatable and unmatched in the industry. It has a flawless full-coverage matte finish instantly brightens skin's appearance and worth the price.

This is a full coverage under-eye concealer that instantly erases dark circles and fine lines to visibly diminish puffiness. The brightener is actually one of my favorite “highlighters” ever! Lightweight texture and the perfect color for brightening dark areas of the face (corners of the mouth, laugh lines and inner corner of eye). I use this before actually putting on my standard color concealer. This formula comes in many shades that can used in conjunction with the brightening shade as well!

This is my favorite natural finish concealer. It’s so light and airy. running out of the house quickly, natural looks, your go-to touch-up purse concealer. Perfect for everyday wear because it’s not drying at all

I'll keep it real with y'all. This formula isn’t my favorite for undereye concealing. However, EVERY other person in the world loves this for undereye. It gets a little creasy for me because it needs a finishing powder and I’m notorious for skipping this step on my undereye. Another soapbox for another day.

My favorite thing about this product is it has a WIDE variety of shades and they have the largest selection of color correcting shades I’ve seen. The peach corrector is my favorite. It beautifully corrects the darkness in my tear trough. Even though this isn’t a contouring article, this concealer's greatest super power shows up in a cream contour.

Tip: the shade beautiful bronze is the perfect undertone for creating a the perfect cheekbone

Now THIS is the best full coverage product found in a drugstore with a flawless matte finish. This multi-use formula conceals imperfections while doubling as a contour/highlight product. Sidenote: this is also the closest dupe to Tarte Shape Tape IMHO if you don’t want to splurge on the best product of all time (just sayinnnnnnn)

This is a a great palette with six color correcting shades. It's lightweight and non-creasing that applies with an ultra-smooth finish and leaves skin feeling soft and supple. This is convenient because it's nice to have it all in one place and the formula dries down beautifully.

Now this product is a two-for-one providing natural looking coverage, this double duty concealer combines makeup with skincare to reduce the visibility of acne and other blemishes while also helping to improve your skin! The makeup formula contains salicylic acid acne medicine to help quickly treat, eliminate and prevent pimples - doing it all undercover ;)

This product is a full-coverage, high-resistance concealer that camouflages imperfections and dark circles. It gives a very natural finish too for an every day look. My biggest note is to make sure you're moisturizing since drugstore concealers can be pretty drying!
